James Cameron's big-budget (and even bigger-grossing) films create unreal worlds all their own. In this personal talk, he reveals his childhood fascination with the fantastic -- from reading science fiction to deep-sea diving -- and how it ultimately drove the success of his blockbuster hits "Aliens," "The Terminator," "Titanic" and "Avatar."

In 2001, TED was acquired and is now run by Chris Anderson, the new-media entrepreneur who started Business 2.0. According to June Cohen, the executive producer of TED Media, the speeches were once filmed and cut for a TV pilot. But she had another idea when she brought on Jason Wishnow, an online-video virtuoso. Together, they made the TED talks streamable on the Web in 2006.

Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, verbal thinkers, and all kinds of smart geeky kids.

We're all embedded in vast social networks of friends, family, co-workers and more. Nicholas Christakis tracks how a wide variety of traits -- from happiness to obesity -- can spread from person to person, showing how your location in the network might impact your life in ways you don't even know.

In the weeks before TED -- amid frenetic preparations for the conference -- I always steal a few calm moments, surrounded by stacks of books by this year's speakers. It's one of my favorite pre-TED rituals. Of course, there's no hope of finishing them all. But I like to immerse myself in at least a few chapters of each, so I can meet the speaker where they are, and understand the conversation they're having with the world.

The TED2010 Mobile conference app is available for registered attendees via the mobile web or for download on select major mobile platforms.
